Is it safe to visit Egypt in 2023?
Why visit Egypt?
There are SO MANY reasons for travelers from the U.S. and around the world to visit Egypt. Egypt is rich in history and boasts epic landmarks such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, and the ancient temples of Luxor and Karnak. The country also offers cool cultural experiences, such as the bustling markets of Cairo, Nile River cruising, and priceless ancient artifacts in its museums. Egypt is also a great place for beach vacations in popular resort areas like Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada.
The U.S. State Department urges U.S. citizens to reconsider travel to Egypt
The U.S. State Department issues travel advisories to inform U.S. citizens about safety and security when traveling abroad. The advisories categorize countries into four levels: exercise normal precautions, exercise increased caution, reconsider travel, and do not travel. The assessments consider factors like crime, terrorism, health risks, and political stability. Travelers should review the advisories along with personal circumstances before making international travel decisions.
According to the U.S. State Department, travelers are advised to reconsider their plans to visit Egypt due to the risk of terrorism. There are specific areas where travel should be avoided entirely. The Sinai Peninsula, except for travel to Sharm El-Sheikh by air, is considered high-risk due to terrorism. The Western Desert is also deemed unsafe due to terrorism. Additionally, caution is advised in Egyptian border areas due to the presence of military zones.
But what do the numbers say?
In the last 20 years or so, there have been 88 deaths of U.S. citizens in Egypt. Only 4 of these deaths were due to some kind of terrorist activity according to the U.S. State Department. Most deaths of U.S. citizens abroad in the U.S. State Department database are due to accidents. The other thing to consider is that the State Department guidelines are really geared toward its own staff, first and foremost. And State Department officials have generally faced more than their fair share of peril through the years. Presumably for regular tourists Egypt continues to be relatively safe. While a spate of terrorist killings of U.S. tourists could occur in the future in Egypt it hasn’t occurred in the past. Generally speaking terrorism tends to have a much higher rate of visibility than other causes of death and so it carries with it the most panic. Over the last couple of decades, though, American tourists were in much more peril driving down the road (due to potential vehicle accident) compared with any potential danger of terrorist attack.
Staying safe in Egypt
To reduce the risk of terrorist attacks while in Egypt, it is advisable to take the following precautions:
Stay informed: Stay updated on travel advisories and security alerts issued by your government and the local authorities in Egypt. Monitor reliable news sources for any potential security concerns or threats in the areas you plan to visit.
Research your destinations: Before traveling to Egypt, research the specific regions and cities you plan to visit. Avoid areas with a history of terrorism or ongoing security issues. Stay updated on any recent incidents or developments.
Follow local security guidance: Pay attention to and adhere to the instructions and guidance provided by local authorities, including security forces and hotel staff. They have a better understanding of the local security situation and can provide valuable advice.
Be vigilant in public places: Exercise increased situational awareness in crowded places, tourist sites, public transportation, and areas frequented by foreigners. Report any suspicious activity or unattended bags or packages to the authorities.
Avoid high-profile events and demonstrations: Stay away from large gatherings, protests, and demonstrations, as they can be targets for terrorist attacks or escalate into violence. Be aware of local events that may have political or religious implications.
Secure your belongings: Keep your personal belongings secure and be cautious of pickpocketing or theft. Avoid displaying signs of wealth or carrying valuable items that may attract attention.
Use reliable transportation: Opt for reputable transportation services and avoid unregulated or unofficial taxis. Prearranged transportation or licensed taxis from reputable companies are generally safer options.
Maintain communication: Share your travel itinerary with family or friends and keep them updated on your whereabouts. Consider registering with your embassy or consulate, so they can reach you in case of an emergency.
Stay updated on health and safety precautions: In addition to security concerns, stay informed about health risks and follow any necessary health and safety guidelines, such as vaccinations and precautions against diseases prevalent in the region.
Remember that while these precautions can help minimize risks, they cannot guarantee complete safety. It is important to assess the current security situation, exercise common sense, and make informed decisions throughout your stay in Egypt.
